What do we really learn in the piano lesson?
We discover the world behind the notes: we learn to listen and to connect, to go slightly forward in tempo or to hold back, to accelerate or to slow down. Music is not about hitting the right notes only, it’s more about listening to the space in between. I’m always happy when i reach to this magical stage in the piano lesson. First it takes few years of ‘getting the notes right’ and then suddenly piano playing becomes the world of listening and feeling the invisible space between the notes. Music is written down in notes, but the beauty of it is not always visible in the score, it’s more how and what we hear behind the notes. Once you discover the power of listening to this ‘invisible space’ behind every note, every piece you play becomes special.
Francesca De Proost is the leading lady in my piano class these days - not just because of practicing consistently but especially for her patience and curiosity of listening so well to the space between the notes.
“The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress” beautifully played by Francesca! 🙏
